Two Ants, One Log

Two ants meet face-to-face on a weathered log, antennae almost touching, sharp against a soft blue-grey background. Shot at high magnification, the everyday drama of insect life becomes an intimate encounter. Fun fact: When ants "touch faces" like this they're often exchanging chemical signals — and sometimes food, mouth-to-mouth, in a process called trophallaxis that keeps the whole colony fed and informed.
